Back to London, it’s time for Wimbledon Tennis and the Glastonbury Music Festival which can only mean one thing – heavy rain storms!! Luckily I’ve been working overseas and catching sunshine in Central Europe, so my raincoat remains firmly in the cupboard.
All kinds of adventures have taken place throughout the last month – my performances with Phil Selway of Radiohead, pianist Stephen Montague and guitarist John King at the Barbican in London for choreographer Merce Cunningham were extremely entertaining.; actually I don’t recall laughing so much during a show with other artists. Bach Cantatas in the gigantic space of the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam was an emotional and engaging experience and I could only marvel as around 100 free copies of Europa 25, my National Anthem for the EU, disappeared in only minutes to the curious crowds. Geneva brought temperatures of above 36 degrees Celcius (that’s almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and dressed in black shirt and black trousers it was the perfect excuse to rapidly lose weight, though my hotel generously had air conditioning. Curiously for Tintinophiles, my hotel was where Professor Calculus stayed in the Adventures of Tin Tin! Paris brought a warmly received debut Githead show where the audience merrily encouraged our playful approach to rock and roll.
A week earlier we performed a live Githead radio session for London based radio station, XFM ( http://www.xfm.co.uk/article.asp?id=96701) So you can have an idea of our live sound, with four entirely live tracks. Anyone over in Amsterdam should anticipate our Dutch debut on 8 July at Paradiso where we will officially rock!
Speaking of the web, if you are curious about the history of web-based music, I’d recommend the freshly published, ‘Virtual Music: How the Web Got Wired for Sound, ‘ by William Duckworth, published by Routledge. Accompanied by a free CD (with many exclusive tracks, including mine), the book traces the development of interactive music through the 20th century from Erik Satie through John Cage, Brian Eno, Moby, and others. The technology itself is described as it has inspired experimentation by artists, including composers who have developed new ways to involve the audience in their music, plus possibilities for the non-musically trained to "play the Web."

MIX-m – MIXED MUSEUM is a contemporary art museum that exists both in physical and digital spaces, in localized and distributed environments, playing with the nature of its architecture: a mix between a real museum space (1:1 scale), a virtual "game like" multi-users environment (for this exhibition at Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, a digital space based on the dimensions of its host: the Bâtiment d’Art Contemporain, BAC) and a model of this "game like" environment (1:50 scale). So you can walk through the internet galleries as you would in a normal gallery environment, move room to room and as always, not touch the exhibits!
For anyone wandering around Liverpool in the next month might be surprised to see my Billboard project for FACT ( http://www.fact.co.uk ) presented there. It’s a work that looks at the variety of life sentences for crime across the world. Once installed, I’ll upload some photos to the Arts webpage so you can view it in location. July will be the debut of the Parallax Beat Brothers, my collaboration with percussionist extraordinaire Pete Lockett (http://www.petelockett.com) at the Purcell Room in London on 19 July. Pete has worked in virtually every field of music conceivable, both live and in the studio, from pop and rock, to free jazz and the classical avant garde, from traditional Carnatic and Hindustani music of North and South India to traditional Japanese taiko drumming. His work can be heard extensively in the recent Bond movies Die Another Day, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough, along with Hollywood blockbusters, City of Angels, The Insider, Plunkett & Maclean,The Bone Collector, The Quiet American and Moulin Rouge. An extensive UK tour will follow in November 2005 and an international tour in 2006-2007.
