In this exclusive Brighton Festival commission, Britain’s hippest young classical ensemble joined forces with composer Scanner and video artist Matt Watkins for an immersive multisensory event inspired by one of the UK’s most influential bands, Joy Division.

Using the latest sound design and other creative technologies (the players performed inside a giant gauze cube, around which the audience moves), this unique sonic and visual spectacle turned the tables on the conventional concert experience, reflecting Joy Division’s experimental, literary and artistic expression. Rather than classical interpretations or cover versions, Scanner and Heritage Orchestra paid homage to the music and signature spirit that defined Joy Division as one of the world’s most progressive ‘art’ bands.

This is a tiny promotional excerpt of the full live performance, filmed at the Brighton Dome, May 2012. Filmed by Alex Wykes.
