So the clocks slipped back, offering us another comforting hour in bed (or more time to work for some of us) but somehow there’s still never enough hours to keep up with everything is there?

A sideways gravity

October was a transcendent month with the extraordinary success of the Live_Transmission: Joy Division Reworked UK tour. The wealth of love and respect from audiences at the shows was magical and the ceaseless Tweets and communications confirmed that we really largely succeeded in translating this music to everyone. Shows are currently being lined up internationally for 2014-15 so here’s hoping that we can continue to share this with more folks as time passes.

Reviews such as this one captured the spirit and feeling of the event, whilst this series of photos demonstrates the epic nature of the performances, and Bay TV in Liverpool interviewed Chris Wheeler, director of Heritage Orchestra and myself about the project at Liverpool Philharmonic before the show and you can still view a short promotional video edit of London’s Royal Festival Hall show on youtube. A further video interview with Bay TV about my own work and practice is also now online, recorded at the same time.

My new collaboration with Swedish choreographer Olof Persson, Me – every body, volume 2 was premiered in Göteborg in October and will appear again in Stockholm at Dansens Hus from 05-07 November 2013. You can view a clip of the work here, and listen to an excerpt from the score, which uses recordings of fitness machines as part of the design, so you can lose weight simply by listening.


It’s still possible to pick up the last remaining copies of the score to his last production, Me – every body, Volume 1online too, both on very limited vinyl and CD. The score featured unreleased work by Pierre Proske / Grimus, Mike Skinner and Jean-Louis Huhta and myself. Just scroll down the page and you’ll see the links.

Sound Matters: Exploring Sound through Forms opened at the Stanley Picker Gallery in Kingston UK last month.  Curated by the esteemed David Toop, the show features my collaboration, Weave Waves, with textile artist Ismini Samanidou, Weave Waves, which presents a very personal take on the relationship between listening and seeing using both audio and textiles. I produced a very special one hour mixtape for Swn Festival Radio in Wales last month, that features a host of unreleased recordings, collages, voices and rather unsettling ambience. You can listen online to this here.

My role as a Visiting Artist to MIT in USA in 2014 has now been officially announced. I’ll be visiting with my long-term friend and collaborator Stephen Vitiello as part of a programme to “investigate the spatial dimensions of sonic environments as a common territory in visual research, music and cognition.” It’s focused on our perceptions of space and architecture and how sound operates within them. We will be supported in our explorations by MIT Center for Art, Science and Technology and Professor Gediminas Urbonas.

A gift of knowledge

The Zygote Festival took place towards the end of October, which proved to be a delightful success. Zygote is a spectacular arts festival for Sleaford UK taking place biannually. This year Zygote explored the theme of seeds and germination as a creative celebration inspired by the town’s connection to the seed industry. Presenting a broad range of art forms from live action dance and acrobatics, digital film and animation, light installations, kinetic sculpture, drama, music, sound installations and pyrotechnics, this year I was commissioned to soundtrack and score the entire two hour evening event.

I’ve uploaded a section which was heard as a Silent Disco in St Denys’ Church throughout the evening for a work choreographed by Amy O’Sullivan and dancers from Leasingham Primary School and artsNK kNacKer’d Youth Dance Company, which you are welcome to download and enjoy.


Now Metal Culture might suggest something quite different, with permed mullet hair, tight lycra trousers and loud riffing guitars, but is rather misleadingly a literature festival in Leigh on Sea in Southend, curated by acclaimed writer Rachel Lichtenstein.

It’s a small, intelligent and thought-provoking festival that place in various outdoor and indoor venues at the heart of the fishing community of Leigh-on-sea on the banks of Thames Estuary, at the point where it officially becomes ‘open sea’. This unique festival aims to provoke discussion, re-awaken senses, excite the adventurous spirit and explore new literature about the sea.

I’ve collaborated with US artist and writer Justin Hopper on Public Record: Estuary which
is a cycle of audio poems intended to be listened to on walks around the old fishing village of Leigh-on-Sea. The poems are inspired by archival reports of 19th-century Estuary sea accidents. Set against the sights of today’s Estuary, they offer a new perspective on the clash of picturesque landscape and post-industrial edgelands. As you walk, you’ll find yourself immersed in the forgotten lives and colourful past of this “half-marine place”, caught between nature and industry, between ancient and modern.

Visitors will be able to borrow free headphones to experience the full sonic experience of the walk, or visit the multimedia installation combining the audio with original photographs of the Estuary by Simon Fowler. For those unable to visit you will be able to download the free audio to your own device and listen so tune into the website soon.

Temporal glow

I’m off to France this month to perform my live scores to early Alain Resnais films at the invitation of Optical Sound at the Fimé Festival. With the kind permission of Resnais himself I’ve rescored Toute la mémoire du monde (1956) and Le chant du Styrène (1957), two extraordinarily inventive yet ‘commercial’ films. In addition I will be premiering unreleased work for a forthcoming re-issue of my Garden is Full of Metal, dedicated to the memory of the late English film director Derek Jarman. These will be performing to a screening of Jarman’s super 8 films.

The following week I’m off to Rome to perform live at the closing ceremony of the PIARS music awards on 13 Novemeber so it will be an opportunity to celebrate with the most mournful sounds whilst folks sip wine and natter and chatter away.

Tickets go on sale this month for a unique night as part of the Sonic Cinema/Gothic film festival at the British Film Institute in London, taking place on 13 December 2013. I’ll be performing my Lachrimae cinema piece with a specially commissioned film by British filmmaker Chris Turner, alongside other very special guests who I have invited to present new works. Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti of Throbbing Gristle notoriety will perform a live soundtrack to a top-secret film of their choice, Gazelle Twin will perform an exclusive live audiovisual set and we will be screening a new commissioned films by Swedish artists Anna and Maria von Hausswolff and Chris Turner. Death Waltz Records will be presenting spectral, dissonant dancefloor tunes in the Benugo lounge until late.

In closing may I selfishly recommended the new website for Mrs Scanner that offers a playfully sly and intelligent look at London from a Dutchies eyes. With subjects ranging from graffiti to beer, it looks set to capture a picture of the city at a pivotal moment in time. The Crafts Council presents Weave Waves, a digital commission, which brings together sound artist Scanner, and textile designer Ismini Samanidou.Weave Waves explores sound, geography and mapping and how this data relates to both textile weave structures and musical scores.

Scanner and Samanidou were inspired by the visual and technical similarities between the digital software they both use and the physicality of code.

An exhibition at the contemporary art museum that presents work using technology that offers the viewer an alternative view of the landscape, featuring Ryoichi Kurokawa, Alexandre Maubert, Babina/Mesmer, Donata Piccolo and many others in a group show.

Scanner will be exhibiting Falling Forwards, an installation in which the visitor finds himself in front of a digital ‘window’ from they can follow an event. Human silhouettes and objects fall into emptiness and are irreversibly pulled by the force of gracity towards an inevitable end.

Night Haunts

Artangel Interaction invited writer and historian Sukhdev Sandhu to write a nocturnal journal unfolding over the course of 2006. His postings will appear sequentially at this microsite specially designed by Mind Unit. Sandhu’s forays see him prospecting in the London night with the people who drive its pulse, from the avian police to security guards, zookeepers and exorcists. Acclaimed artist and musician Scanner has collaborated with Sukhdev and Ian Budden of Mind Unit to compose the sound for the site. Bittersweet Songs for the Sleepless City

NightJam is the latest project in Artangel Interaction’s Nights of London series of artist-led collaborations with people who have a special view on a hidden side of the nocturnal city. Scanner invited young people at New Horizon Youth Centre in King’s Cross to collaborate on a creative project that expresses how the city at night looks and sounds to their ears and eyes. Through music and voice workshops they explored the sense of freedom and fear, celebration and solitude of the concealing darkness. Meanwhile, they captured their nights on disposable cameras, taking images that are at times eerie, startling, contemplative and funny. NightJam presents two elusive visual and musical journeys through the city’s ‘quiet’ hours.

NightJam presents two music tracks, a film, photographs, that can be experienced and freely downloaded. Additionally it features remixes of NightJam by Stephen Vitiello, Hakan Lidbo, Troy Banarzi, Si-cut.db and Pete Lockett.
