Now February may be the shortest month of the year but that doesn’t seem to have made it any less packed with joyful explorations.
Scanni, my official release with Anni Hogan, finally hit the streets out on Cherry Red Records as well as digital outlets, and has been receiving extremely positive responses. According to some writers “ it sucks you in and transports you to another time and space entirely, and deserves recognition as a triumph of creative / artistic freedom over the desire for commercial success and will undoubtedly become a firm favourite with followers of both artists.” Now I must remember to pay these journalists what I promised them.

Over in The Netherlands I attended the premiere of Fresas, with the Junior Company of Dutch National Ballet as part of the anniversary celebrations for Jeroen Bosch. In between work I was fortunate enough to visit the extraordinary exhibition of paintings by Bosch, the most comprehensive showing of his work in 500 years, which was astonishing. Three hours there and still not enough time to immerse yourself in all the works displayed.

On returning to the UK, I was off the very next day to Ipswich to Dance East for a showing of Pattern Recognition, a very special collaboration between the choreographer Alexander Whitney and digital artist Memo Akten, using cutting edge motion-responsive technology. I’d been working with the cellist Oliver Coates on the score so it was a joy to hear it map and measure the movement across the stage, and marvel as dance expanded beyond the physical body into machines too. The official world premiere of this week will be at the Platform Theatre, London on April 7th this year.
One of my favourite tunes by The Talking Heads is Listening Wind taken from their album Remain in Light (1980), a release that certainly ranks in my top-ten releases of all time. So when British group Dutch Head approached me to remix their reinterpretation of this song I could not resist the opportunity. Featuring my good pals George Taylor and Erica Nockalls who also plays with The Wonderstuff and The Proclaimers, I stripped the song right back into a very reductive yet seductive variation. I contributed a 75 mixtape to Mixology last month too, featuring a collage of tunes from Demdike Stare, Martin Gore, Zoviet France, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Anthony Child, Andy Stott and so many more. It was produced to accompany the release by Tiptop Audio Records, TTAR V.A. 002, featuring new work from Joao Ceser, ANGLE, Markus Fix, Drumcell, John Tejada and a brand new piece of mine produced on my Eurorack Synth System. I was delighted to finally make a special appearance over at Dutch Girl in London’s award-winning Blog, to answer questions regarding my collaborations with contemporary dance and also to reveal future projects in the pipeline. Read my thoughts on creativity and dance here.
March brings a couple of now rather rare live shows, since I’ve largely withdrawn from live performance in recent years. Firstly I’ll be performing a live show at the launch for the ReVu Video Editor App at Google Campus in London on 10 March. The following week I’m making my debut collaboration with boundary pushing multi-media artists The Light Surgeons at the Convergence Festival in London. Their work spans many diverse mediums; print, photography, motion graphics, short films, exhibitions and installations. Over the past ten years they have helped to pioneer new forms of cross platform practice, particularly with their audiovisual performances, expanded cinema projects and installations. Closing the month I’ll be making a special visit to Rijeka Airport in Croatia to begin the creative process towards my installation that will be opening in July 2016. More on that when the time comes of course.
